Why Did China Publicly Reveal Its 094 Nuclear Submarine? Major Powers Rarely Do This!
No major power has ever so clearly displayed its underwater second-strike nuclear capabilities. This time, China openly showcased its 094 strategic “Big Black Fish” (nuclear sub), revealing every detail—even the hump-shaped missile compartment long criticized by the West—without concealment. The message: Look all you want.
The West knows China’s style: it never reveals current-gen weapons unless next-gen ones are ready. The 094’s public debut signals that the rumored 096 is likely undergoing sea trials or entering service, the 097 has broken technical barriers, and even the 098 may be in development.
China’s restrained approach avoids explicit threats, preferring strategic ambiguity. But recent clues are telling:
- Combined with the expose of compact, truck-mounted ICBMs, this suggests submarine-launched missiles are now miniaturized.
- The 094’s “hump” (which reduces speed/stealth) will likely vanish on the 096.
- Next-gen subs (reportedly ~20,000 tons) will carry more weapons, improve crew livability, and extend endurance.
Given China’s advances in 6th-gen fighters, drone carriers, hypersonics, Type 055 destroyers, and EMAL-equipped assault ships, underwater nuclear progress was inevitable.
Why reveal the 094 now? Four reasons stand out:
- Show of Force: Global instability and Western desperation risk military miscalculation. Displaying second-strike capability deters aggression.
- Next-Gen Warning: With the 096 near operational, showing the “outdated” 094 hints at leaps in tonnage, tech, and lethality.
- Refreshing Memory: After China’s flawless ICBM test last year (contrasted with rivals’ failures), this reminds adversaries of its undersea might.
- Preventing Misjudgment: Recent J-10C drills “killing” J-20 stealth fighters (via integrated sensor-missile systems) prove aerial dominance. Revealing submarine strength counters Western assumptions of undersea weakness.

As the commander stated during the reveal:
“We await only one order. We will launch this missile—resolutely.”
For a West steeped in piracy-era instincts, China must speak their language: periodic displays of unambiguous power.
Comments:
- Comment 1: Too outdated—had to show it before retirement.
- Comment 2: A veteran getting screen time before retirement.
- Comment 3: Proves the 096 is operational. PLA’s style: reveal one gen while deploying the next, with 1–2 more in R&D. Subs haven’t flexed in ages.
- Comment 4: Knew about the 094 from military magazines in the early 2000s. Dreamed big then. If it doesn’t show now, it’ll retire unseen! 😂
- Comment 5: Really? I recall the U.S. and Russia often showing their nuclear subs.
